Dr. Joyce Griffin-Sobel
The Board of Trustees of the Helene Fuld College of Nursing unanimously voted to appoint Dr. Joyce Griffin-Sobel as President and CEO of the College. She assumed the post of president on May 13, 2019.
Dr. Griffin-Sobel comes to Helene Fuld with extensive professional experience in nursing as a practitioner, researcher, administrator, fundraiser, tenured professor, and college dean. In her last position as Dean and tenured Professor for the College of Nursing at Washington State University (WSU), she was responsible for the College’s five campuses, $20 million annual budget, and a BSN through PhD student body with 1,000+ students. Prior to WSU, Dr. Griffin-Sobel was Dean and Professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University, in Syracuse, NY. Other highlights of her background include ten years at Hunter College’s School of Nursing in New York City, where she held ever-increasing positions of responsibility from director of the undergraduate program to Acting Dean and tenured Professor. Known for her innovative leadership, colleges she has led have achieved National League for Nursing Center of Excellence Awards, successful accreditations and innovative programs in interprofessional education.
A proud Navy veteran, Dr. Griffin-Sobel was the first Director of Nursing Research for the US Navy Nurse Corps, and has been the Editor of the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, which under her tutelage received an EXCEL award for Most Improved Scholarly Journal from the Society of National Association Publications.
Dr. Griffin-Sobel has been the recipient of over $6 million of grant funding in the areas of interprofessional education and teaching with technology. She is the author of two books and numerous professional journal articles in nursing as well as the recipient of many academic and professional honors. She earned her PhD in Nursing at New York University, MS in Nursing at Hunter College, and BSN at Lehman College. Dr. Griffin-Sobel was inducted as a fellow into the National League of Nursing Academy of Nursing Education in 2008, and the American Academy of Nursing in 2013.
A Bronx, New York native, Dr. Griffin-Sobel returned to her hometown of NYC after leaving Washington State. She resides in Manhattan with her husband.
