ADMISSION PROCESS

  1. Application: Mail a completed application to the ADMISSIONS OFFICE with the required non-refundable application and testing fee of $50 (money order or certified check only). Enclose a copy of your current LPN registration. After receipt of your application, you will be notified by mail of the next testing date.

  2. H.S. and PN Transcripts: Request your high school and school of practical nursing to send your official transcripts to the ADMISSIONS OFFICE. If you did not graduate from high school, enclose a photocopy of your U.S. high school equivalency scores with your application. Students educated in foreign countries must submit high school transcripts or equivalencies. These must be submitted in English. (See Admissions Office for details.)

  3. College credits: If you have earned credits from any college, request official transcripts from each college to be sent to the ADMISSIONS OFFICE. If college credit was earned in a foreign country or if you have foreign educational professional credentials, you must have your transcript(s) evaluated by the World Education Services. Their address is P.O. Box 745, Old Chelsea Station, New York, New York 10013.

  4. Pre-entrance Tests: Testing days are scheduled at the college. The testing day is from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The testing program includes the following: reading comprehension, basic mathematics, writing skills, and nursing. The nursing test includes: Fundamentals, Pharmacology, basic psycho-social principles, Medical-Surgical and Parent-Child Health Nursing. Content is limited to what the average, well-trained practical nurse should know. The nursing test, along with a minimum of one year LPN work experience, references, and interview, establish the basis for granting 27 quarter-credits in nursing upon entrance to the college.

  5. On testing day, general information about the college and the pre-requisite course, Selected Topics in Chemistry and Math, is provided and test results are given to each applicant. Students with passing scores are scheduled for interviews. Students with unacceptable scores are advised of their options. If remediation is recommended, an applicant may apply for retesting after remediation is completed. There must be a minimum of three months between the initial test and retesting. Each test may be repeated only once.

  6. Applicants are urged to apply for testing six months to a year prior to the desired admission date. Passing test scores are valid for a two-year period. If entry to the program is delayed for a longer period of time, testing must be repeated.

  7. Interview/Reference/Medical Form: During an interview with a faculty member, the applicant is asked to authorize a reference form to be sent to a current or former employer. At this time, the applicant is also given a medical form. As identified on the medical form, the college requires a complete medical history, physical examination, and proof of various immunizations that are required by clinical agencies used by the college. New York State requires college students born on or after January 1, 1957 to be immunized against measles, mumps, and rubella. The completed form, signed by a physician, must be on file before the applicant can be accepted into the college.

  8. Selected Topics in Chemistry and Mathematics (SCI 101) Pre-requisite: Upon successful completion of all pre-entrance tests and an interview, applications for Selected Topics in Chemistry and Mathematics are mailed to each applicant. All applicants must successfully complete this pre-requisite course or challenge exam before starting the program. SCI 101 is conducted one day or two evenings a week over an 11-week period. All applicants must complete the course by the end of the eleventh week. No time extension is permitted. Applicants who either fail the course or who fail to complete the course within the time allowed will be given the option to repeat the course once. The course is graded on a pass/fail basis. A grade of C+ must be achieved in order to pass.

  9. Course textbooks can be purchased for $165 (cost subject to change). The cost of the course is $190/credit ($855) and must be paid by money order or certified check. A $100 deposit, which is applied towards tuition, is non-refundable and cannot be held over for the next SCI 101 course. Full payment is due before the course begins. No deferred payments are allowed.

Selected Topics in Chemistry and Mathematics Challenge Test:
Passing a challenge test administered by the college may satisfy this course requirement. (See course description, p. 45). After reviewing the syllabus and suggested study materials for this college level course, applicants may take the challenge test. There is a $100 testing fee. Applicants who fail the challenge test will be allowed to enroll in SCI 101 once. The full course fee will be charged. The challenge test cannot be repeated.

ARTICULATING STUDENTS
Helene Fuld College of Nursing has articulation agreements with several practical nursing programs for selected direct-continuation students. Pre-entrance testing and the work experience requirement are waived. Students must pass the NCLEX-PN before being accepted into the college. After receipt of applications to the college, applications for Selected Topics in Chemistry and Mathematics, which is the only course that may be taken before licensure, are mailed to articulating applicants.

ACCEPTANCE

When all necessary information is on file and Selected Topics in Chemistry and Mathematics is completed satisfactorily, applicants will receive an acceptance letter and are then eligible to enter the next class in which there is space available.

Upon acceptance, applicants are required to make a deposit of $100 toward their tuition. Payment must be received by the date requested in the acceptance letter. This fee is non-refundable.

MATRICULATION
A matriculated student has been formally accepted into the college and may apply for financial aid. Students are accepted into fall (November) or spring (April) terms. A non-matriculated student has not yet been formally accepted into the college. A non-matriculated student is not eligible for financial aid.

TRANSFER CREDITS. CREDIT BY EQUIVALENCY TESTING

The college accepts credits earned in Introduction to Psychology, Human Development, and Introduction to Sociology, through the College-Level Examination Program. All CLEP exam results must be received before starting the program.

College courses in the Behavioral Sciences completed with a grade of C, within the ten-year period prior to application, are transferable. The course title and/or description must be comparable to the required course in each case. There is no time limit for English. Credit for English will be granted with a grade of C or better. However, transfer credit for English I (ENG 281) and English II (ENG 282) will not be granted to those who fail to write satisfactorily on the admission writing sample.

Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology courses must be completed with a grade of C+ or better within the ten year period for transfer credits to be accepted.

The nursing sequence must be taken in its entirety at the college.

After admission, students must complete all course requirements at this college.
