Helene Fuld College of Nursing's Division of Continuing Education promotes continuing education programs in nursing and allied health by offering courses on a variety of healthcare subjects to current practitioners.  Educational programs of interest to residents of the Harlem Community are also offered.

Current Course Offerings

"WELCOME BACK TO NURSING”
A Nurse Refresher Course

Course Description
This two-weekend series refresher course in Nursing enables the returning nurse who has been away from active practice to regain the confidence in taking care of clients in various medical surgical setting.  The instructor, a critical care certified educator will:

1.       Refresh nurses knowledge about the    
           fundamentals of safe nursing practice;
2.       demonstrate nursing skills;
3.       Supervise nurses while practicing skills.

The workshop consists of two days of lecture and discussion on nursing concepts and new trends in the healthcare field.  Each lecture day will be followed by a day of hands on clinical experience in the acute care setting. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with patients experiencing medical-surgical conditions. This includes practicing skills that were learned in the classroom.

In order to register for this course, participants are required to submit the following :

1.       Current RN or LPN license
2.       Current CPR Card
3.       Malpractice Insurance
4.       Medical Clearance

a.     PPD status (recent CXR negative for TB if PPD is positive)

b.     Recent immunization profile including Hepatitis B, rubella, and chickenpox

c.     Recent Physical Exam or statement of good health from your primary care provider

       5.    Personal Health Insurance

The participants are required to come in complete Nurse’s Uniform and bring their own stethoscopes on the day of clinical experience.

IV THERAPY & PHLEBOTOMY SKILLS FOR NURSES

Course Description
This workshop is designed for nurses to update their knowledge about Peripheral Intravenous Therapy (PIV) and Peripherally Inserted Catheter Central (PICC) lines.  Participants will be taught the principles of IV therapy in a wide variety of health care settings. Hands-on training will be provided to gain psychomotor skills in phlebotomy, performing peripherally inserted venipuncture (PIV), and monitoring vascular access device (VAD). This workshop is being presented because more health care facilities are requiring nurses and ancillary staff to have the advanced skills to promote their clients’ health and ensure the safe delivery of client care. The knowledge and skills learned by the participants will enhance their professional practice. This workshop is approved by the New York State Nurses Association for 8.1 CEU credits.
 

BASIC PHARMACOLOGY WORKSHOP Course Description
This workshop will review pharmacologic principles and current information needed for a better understanding of the nurse’s role in pharmacotherapeutics in medical – surgical nursing practice.   A review of dosage calculation will be presented. Practice test questions will be included to prepare for a pre-employment pharmacology examination. Emphasis is placed on utilizing the nursing process related to pharmacology and the nurse’s ability to think critically.
 

CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH FOR THE HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL

Course Description
This course is designed for healthcare providers who have little or no previous knowledge of Spanish and wish to communicate easily with their Spanish speaking clients. Participants will learn basic health language skills in Spanish. Practice session will include interviewing clients about their symptoms and needs; explaining procedures, admission, discharge instructions, and other health related matters to Spanish speaking clients.
 
BASIC EKG INTERPRETATION Course Description
This workshop is designed to educate nurses with the knowledge and skills that are essential when caring for the client who is being monitored on an EKG.  Cardiac arrhythmia recognition and interpretation will be taught in depth along with nursing interventions.   Participants must bring their calipers to be used in measuring the different EKG waveforms.
12-LEAD EKG INTERPRETATION

This workshop is designed to educate healthcare professionals with the basic knowledge, skills and principles in reading a 12-lead EKG. Participants will learn the sequential scheme for rapid EKG interpretation which includes identification of heart rate, rhythm, determination of axis deviation and its common causes, hypertrophy and infarction. Emergency and medical and nursing management of patients with various cardiac problems related to abnormal EKG readings will be discussed. Knowledge of Basic EKG arrhythmia interpretation is required to attend this course. Participants must bring their calipers to be used in measuring the different EKG waveforms.
 

UNDERSTANDING THE INTRICACIES OF THE MINIMUM DATA SET (MDS)  Course Description
This course will educate Long Team Care Facility Healthcare Professionals on the accurate utilization of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) manual. Participants will learn the different types of MDS assessments done in the long term care setting including the specific forms  and appropriate coding to utilize for different events in the resident’s/client’s health status. They will also develop a comprehensive understanding of the connection between MDS and the Care Planning Process. Strategies for effective care planning will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the different reasons why significant change MDS are completed and the subsequent documentation that should be written with it. This course is specifically designed for health care professionals who are new to the concept of MDS.

ADVANCED PHARMACOLOGY

 

Course Description
This course is designed for nurses to update their knowledge about medications presently administered in a wide variety of health care settings.  Recent changes in drug administration practices will be presented. Recommendations to prevent medication errors will be included to ensure patient safety and promote delivery of high quality patient care.

EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP IN HEALTHCARE SETTINGS

Course Description
This course is designed to develop health care professionals’ leadership skills.  Participants will gain a better understanding of leadership techniques and principles to manage change, delegation, motivation, and team building.  Health care professionals in direct care, management, education, or administrative roles will benefit from ideas, strategies, and potential outcomes provided by gaining knowledge and application of leadership principles.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS

 

Course Description
This course is directed toward healthcare providers such as nurses, physicians, paramedics, lifeguards and other allied healthcare providers.  Adult and pediatric CPR, foreign body airway obstruction in conscious and unconscious patients, use of barrier protection (Pocket masks), bag valve mask ventilation (BVM’s) and the use of the Automated External Defibrillator are covered in this course.  Participants are required to pass a written test and perform the psychomotor skills required by the American Heart Association.  Students will receive the BLS for Healthcare Providers book and a course completion card.

UNRAVELING THE MYSTERY OF ACID-BASE BALANCE

Course Description
This course will provide important information about arterial oxygenation and acid-base balance. Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) analysis is an important diagnostic and therapeutic tool in managing various patient conditions. Many healthcare providers find it difficult to interpret the ABG data. This difficulty results from attempting to analyze all the “cocktail” of results at once. A systematic method will make it easy to approach this problem. The essential steps of a systematic method will be the focus of this program. Gaining the knowledge in interpreting ABG’s will assist the nurse and other healthcare providers in understanding and caring for the acutely ill patient who is going through an acid-base imbalance.
